IT Governance

Technology Services recognized the need for IT Governance and led the effort to define it. Since IT Governance affects all areas of the institution, we formed a committee with representation from across the institution, academic departments, administrators, researchers.

Seeking to answer these 3 key questions:

  1. What decisions must be made?
  2. Who should make these decisions?
  3. How will we make and monitor these decisions?

The committee held meetings through the Fall of 2015. This group defined the IT Governance Principles under which the institution will work They defined the process that a proposal would need to go through from request to funding, then developed the first draft of the IT Governance policy in the Winter of 2016, and ratified the policy soon after.

Each project, proposal, or request will be vetted in 4 key areas:

  1. Business applications needs
  2. IT architecture decisions
  3. IT infrastructure decisions
  4. IT investment decisions

IT Governance Principles

  • The decision making processes regarding all Information Technology used throughout the University must be straightforward, transparent, and effectively communicated to the entire University community.
  • Research, education, and clinical missions must be able to employ information technology that is flexible and adjustable to foster innovation by the faculty; as close to the state-of-the art as necessary; and resourced and supported robustly.
  • Administrative information technology must employ rigorous standardization, process integration, and efficiency with careful consideration given to total cost of ownership.
  • All information technology must provide sufficient and expedient deployment, training, and support to the University community to ensure optimal utilization.
  • All information technology decisions must adhere to relevant information technology security standards and best practices.
