Wireless Network Services

Thanks in large part to a substantial donation by Board of Administrators member and co-founder of Netscape Jim Clark, Tulane University added wireless connectivity to its uptown, downtown, and satellite campuses.

Important information about wireless

• Availability: Wireless access is available in all academic buildings on campus and in public spaces, such as study halls, in residence halls
• Registration: Members of the Tulane community who wish to use the wireless network must register their wireless card at https://tuwac.tcs.tulane.edu
• Configuration: The most important information about the wireless network is the SSID or network name. The SSID is tulane in all lower-case letters.

More configuration info

• Click on the Start Menu
• Select Control Panel
• Select Network and Internet Connections
• Select Network Connections (at the bottom)
• Right Click on the Wireless icon and select Properties

• Go to the Apple menu
• Select System Properties or Control Panel
• Select Network or TCP/IP
• Select the Airport card from the drop down list

Enter the following information, or use this as a guide:

SSID: tulane
Network Type: Access Point
Network Name: tulane

• WEP, Wireless Encryption Protocol: DO NOT check this box
• Encryption Enabled: DO NOT check this box
• Network Authentication: DO NOT check this box
• Enable Data Security: DO NOT check this box

Built in cards may require you to "enable" them before you use them. This may entail selecting a check box in a software utility or physically turning on a switch:

Dell
Software on/off switch (check box) in the "True Mobile Start Menu" configuration utility

Gateway
Round button above the keyboard activates the wireless card

Hewlett-Packard
Physical On/off switch

Sony
Software on/off switch (check box) in the card configuration utility

Toshiba
