What Tulane Parents Need to Know About Phishing

Phishing email scammers attempt to gain access to passwords and other valuable information by using social engineering techniques. The sender pretends to be an entity that the user knows or trusts. These messages always contain links or attachments that the attacker tries to fool the user into clicking or opening. An attacker will often try to create a sense of urgency and sometimes appeal to your sense of greed, so if a message seems to be too good to be true, it’s probably a phishing attempt. Parents should encourage their student to learn as much as possible about phishing in order to avoid compromising his/her account. Keep the following in mind:  

  • Tulane Technology Services will never ask for your student’s password in any of our communications.
  • Students are not required to reset passwords according to any specific timetable. We will never threaten to cut off access to your student's account.  
  • Please make sure your student is savvy about internet "work from home" scams. Internet scammers are constantly looking for entry on to the Tulane network and actively try to manipulate students into giving up their usernames and passwords. Revealing a Tulane password can have devastating effects on your student and other Tulane users.
  • Encourage your student write or call the Technical Support and Network Operations Center before responding to any message that seems suspicious. The NOC can always verify the legitimacy of any email message. (Reach them at help@tulane.edu or 504-862-8888 from the uptown campus or 504-988-8888 from the downtown campus). Students may also contact Information Security at security@tulane.edu.
  • Your student can learn more about phishing and social engineering by viewing our Security Awareness Training videos (requires Tulane log in). Access is available at http://ts.tulane.edu/security-awareness-training
  • Parents/guardians that need access to Tulane accounts for the purpose of paying fees should request that the student add them as an authorized user here http://pandora.tcs.tulane.edu/acctrec/ . Please don’t ask your student to share their password with you.
